چکیده

Abstract. Lake Maryut (northwestern Nile Delta, Egypt) was a key feature of Alexandria's hinterland and economy during Greco-Roman times. Its shores accommodated major economic centers, the lake acted as gateway between valley Mediterranean. It is suggested that lake-level changes, connections with sea, possible high-energy events considerably shaped human occupation history Maryut. To reconstruct hydrology in historical times, we used faunal remains, geochemistry (Sr isotopic signature ostracods) geoarcheological indicators relative changes. The data show both rise inputs to basin first millennia BCE CE ca. 1.5 m Roman period. A deposit, inferred from reworked radiocarbon dates, may explain an enigmatic sedimentary hiatus previously attested Maryut's chronostratigraphy.

Tracking Nile Delta Vulnerability to Holocene Change

Understanding deltaic resilience in the face of Holocene climate change and human impacts is an important challenge for the earth sciences in characterizing the full range of present and future wetland responses to global warming. Here, we report an 8000-year mass balance record from the Nile Delta to reconstruct when and how this sedimentary basin has responded to past hydrological shifts. In ...

A high-resolution record of late-Holocene

35 Abstract: We reconstructed the late-Holocene surface-moisture history and vegetation dynamics of a raised bog in Michigan using testate amoebae, peat humification, pollen, stomata and plant macrofossils. Our primary objective was to compare bog palaeohydrology with the water-level history of Lake Michigan, and to regional and local vegetation changes. Hydrologic histories inferred from testa...

A Holocene–Late Pleistocene geomagnetic inclination record from Grandfather Lake, SW Alaska

S U M M A R Y Our study of lake sediments from Grandfather Lake in SW Alaska (N59.8181◦, W158.5597◦) yields the first geomagnetic inclination record for Alaska that spans the entire Holocene. The record is based on three overlapping sets of piston cores and is well dated by seven AMS radiocarbon dates. Its magnetic component consists of PSD (5–15μm) magnetite that occurs in concentrations rangi...

Late Pleistocene and late Holocene lake highstands in the Pyramid Lake subbasin of Lake Lahontan, Nevada, USA

Shoreline geomorphology, shoreline stratigraphy, and radiocarbon dates of organic material incorporated in constructional beach ridges record large lakes during the late Pleistocene and late Holocene in the Pyramid Lake subbasin of Lake Lahontan, Nevada, USA. During the late Holocene, a transgression began at or after 3595 F 35 C yr B.P. and continued, perhaps in pulses, through 2635 F 40 C yr ...

Human-induced sedímentologícal changes in Manzala Lagoon, Nile Delta, Egypt

The Manzala Lagoon in Egypt's Nile ' »elta has become a sediment sink of reduced area and depth, with increased contaminant levels. Loss of much-needed fresh to brackish water reserves and decreased fish catches have serious ramifications. Herein, maps of temporal and regional sediment distributions in Manzala incorporate petrological and statistical analyses of 200 surficial and short core sam...
